Curriculum

The Residency program in Pediatric Dentistry is designed to produce strong, evidence-based Pediatric Dentists who may choose to pursue a career in either teaching, practice or both.

The didactic core is provided through the academic facilities and faculty at UCLA School of Dentistry and includes Rounds, Seminars and Conferences in the areas of Histology, Embryology, Growth and Development, Oral Pathology, Behavior Management, Preventive Dentistry, Sedation and Anesthesia, Pediatric Medicine, Practice Management and Research Methodology.

Residents receive clinical training in all areas of Pediatric Dentistry, including hospital care, management of child behavior, craniofacial growth, the provision of care utilizing various sedation and anesthesia modalities, and research methodology.  Along with proficiency in the traditional areas of the specialty, the program offers strong didactic and clinical orthodontic components to increase the resident’s skills in this area. The resident will rotate through various areas within the UCLA Center for the Health Sciences Hospital to gain expertise in the management of children with special needs such as chronic diseases and developmental disabilities.

A research project involving the collection and analysis of data resulting in a written report of publishable quality is an important part of the program.  Upon successful completion of the Pediatric Dentistry Residency program, the resident will meet the advanced education eligibility requirements for examination and certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Teaching experience will be gained in the second year of the program at the Dental School as well as at affiliated off-site clinics.
